Career Path : LANDSCAPER 1
The Landscaper 1 must have attained all the skills and requirements of the Novice position and all of the following requirements and job skills for the Landscaper 1 position. The Landscaper 1 will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. The Landscaper 1 must perform work at the company’s standard procedures, and time standards consistently AND learn 17 % or more of the Landscape 2 position per quarter to qualify for a raise. Landscaper 1 will be expected to be working towards the Landscaper 2 position and must attain all job skills of the Landscaper 2 before attaining that level of job position and pay.
REQUIREMENTS
Meet all requirements of Landscape Novice job description.
Maintain physical fitness level necessary to complete assigned job tasks.
Comply with all company policies/procedures and safety requirements.
Conscientious of safety procedures for company employees on the job site.
Report all unsafe conditions and practices to daily leader or foreman.
Proper care of tools/equipment on job site to avoid loss, damage or misuse.
Manage “Landscape Novice” employees under supervision of foreman.
Continuing education – minimum of 12hrs./yr (8/hr in-house training, 4/hr
outside source. Mandatory is a Red Cross basic first aid class).
JOB SKILLS
Identify broken, poorly running, and misused equipment, fill out appropriate repair tag.
Safely drive a truck with a trailer with standard or automatic transmission.
Be proficient in the use of the following tools and equipment; post pounder, pole pruner, ladder, wheel grinder and file, large walk-behind mowers (36″, and 48″), riding lawn mowers, aerator, dethatcher, chain saw, & belly and push spreaders
Become proficient in sharpening mower blades, hand tools, and hedge trimmer blades
Able to identify by common names of 25 frequently used plants that appear on the CLT plant list (bedding flowers, ground cover, shrubs, perennials, trees, and turf.)
Prune trees, shrubs, and vines to encourage healthy growth.
Apply granular fertilizers under the supervision of maintenance foreman.
Stake and tie trees and shrubs.
Guy wiring of trees.
Attach vines and espaliers to support trellises using appropriate materials.
Understand and complete the following basic irrigation repairs; sprinkler head replacement, sprinkler head arc and radius adjustment, lateral line repairs.
Able to identify by common name, 5 frequently seen weeds in planting beds. (Spotted Spurge, Tumble weed, Oxalis, Filaree, Purslane, and Knotweed)
Able to differentiate weed grasses from desirable turf grasses in lawn areas. (Crabgrass, Nutgrass, Bermudagrass, Annual Bluegrass, Dallis Grass)
Identify general needs of plants. (water, light, fertilizer)
Recognize plant material in stress or in a problem state.
Able to identify by common name 5 frequently seen garden pests. (aphid, snail, slug, whitefly, mealybug, gopher, mole, squirrel, rabbits)
Basic drainage installation (down spout drain/ catch basin) under supervision of foreman.
Perform project demolition.
Basic tractor operation/inspection/maintenance.
Lateral irrigation lines construction/installation under supervision of foreman.
Location of irrigation point of connection and understand emergency shutdown procedure.
Basic dry stack stone wall construction.
Basic dry set flagstone work.
Assist with lawn area grading/ sod installation.
Assist w/ planting and develop advanced planting skills.
Drip line/ emitter layout and install under supervision of foreman.
Mulch installation including detailing around plants.
Proficient use of rototiller, trencher, compactor and other basic machinery.
Check fluid levels and monitor safe operation of equipment used.
Basic low voltage landscape lighting installation.
Basic dry set brick work.
Communicate with lead people progress of tasks.
Able to meet company production rates and standards.
EVALUATION
Proficient, safe, proper use of equipment and tools as specified.
Proper and safe skills in demolition work.
Proper installation of basic drainage systems, irrigation trenching and laterals, plant material.
Able to install drip system laterals and emitters, and mulching.
Identify by common name 25 frequently used plants.
Able to prune shrubs, trees, and groundcover correctly.
Know basic fertilizer application techniques.
Know how and when to sharpen cutting tools.
Identify by common names 5 common weeds.
Recognize plant and irrigation problems.
Communicate problems to foreman.
Able to stake, prune, and tie vines.
Adhere to company policies, standards and safety guidelines.
Able to work with other employees as a team.
Able to meet or exceed company production rates set forth.
Able to produce accurate time sheets & documentation.
Landscape 1 is expected to demonstrate proficiency in the above skill areas prior to working towards the position of Landscape 2.

This position reports directly to lead person/daily supervisor/ foreman.

Base Wage x 1.25
